On July 1, APPE welcomed Gretchen Winter as our new Chair of the Executive Board.
For the past 10 years, Ms. Winter has served as the Executive Director of the Center for Professional Responsibility in Business and Society at the College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before that, she worked at Baxter International Inc. as Vice President and Counsel, Business Practices, where she developed the company’s global ethics program. She holds a J.D. from the University of Chicago and received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Ms. Winter joined APPE in 2008 and has served as a member of the board since July, 2014. As chair, Ms. Winter is looking forward to working closely with APPE’s Executive Board and to identifying and responding to the needs and interests of APPE members. Over the next two years, Ms. Winter says she is eager participate in the effort to “structure the organization in a way that will enable APPE to thrive for the foreseeable future.”
Although Ms. Winter has served as Chair of the Ethics and Compliance Officer Association Board of Directors, and is currently President of the Board of the Leadership Fellows Association of Leadership Greater Chicago, she is looking forward to the unique opportunity to serve on a board primarily comprised of academics. Speaking of her APPE colleagues, she comments: “It’s wonderful—the tremendously positive contribution that individual board members make is quite spectacular. They are engaged. They want to bring things to conclusion using the best practices that they can, based on their experience and research. That’s a wonderful gift to APPE, and it makes for a really strong level of commitment from each one of the board members.”
With her more business-oriented background, a focus on teamwork is a strength that Ms. Winter brings to the board. She emphasizes that she is looking forward to fostering “a strong team-oriented environment for our members and our board members and working together to accomplish APPE’s goals and objectives.” As APPE enters a new chapter in the association’s new home at the Prindle Institute, Ms. Winter anticipates that the beautiful, reflective setting, and the chance to partner with such an active and innovative ethics center, will aid in these efforts.
Ms. Winter succeeds Sarah Pfatteicher, Associate Dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, who served as APPE Chair of the Executive Board from 2015-2017.
