The Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) invites applications and nominations of persons to serve as its Executive Director. We welcome applications from candidates with a variety of backgrounds, including scholars, teachers, professionals, and non-profit administrators. Successful candidates will have a demonstrated interest in ethics, an aptitude for non-profit administration, a broad intellectual curiosity, and enthusiasm for convening scholars and practitioners across many fields of practical and professional ethics. 2017 Membership Survey Results

We are pleased to share the results of the 2017 APPE Membership Survey. The survey was administered via SurveyMonkey between June 26 and July 28, 2017. The link to the survey was distributed through the APPE listserv, and we collected a total of 182 responses to our 39 question survey, which reflects a response rate of approximately 11%. Most of the responses (80%, 144) were from current APPE members. Given that APPE had about 700 members in FY17, the response rate among members was approximately 21%, and somewhat higher than the overall response rate. APPE Spotlight on Ethics Bowl Chair Richard Greene

APPE is excited to highlight the work of the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl (IEB) Board Chair Dr. Richard Greene! Richard Greene earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy in 1998 from the University of California, Santa Barbara. His research focuses on epistemology and the intersection of popular culture and philosophy, and he is currently working on his fifteenth book on philosophy and pop culture. Some of his previous titles include Twin Peaks and Philosophy (forthcoming), American Horror Story and Philosophy (forthcoming), Mr. Robot and Philosophy, The Princess Bride and Philosophy, and Quentin Tarantino and Philosophy. He has also lectured on philosophy and pop culture at the Smithsonian Institution. He is entering his 5th year as the Chair of the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl Board, is on the Steering Committee of the National High School Ethics Bowl, and is the Executive Director of the Society for Skeptical Studies. In his spare time, he enjoys playing the ukulele. Dr. Greene first became involved with Ethics Bowl in 1999 at San Jose State University when he was presented with an opportunity to coach the college team. Although he had not previously heard of Ethics Bowl, he recalls that “it sounded interesting and I like those activities with students where you get to work closely and help them develop philosophically outside of the classroom, so I sort of blindly volunteered.” As an IEB coach, Dr. Greene enjoyed working with students to help them develop and articulate their ethical positions. “It’s teaching outside of the classroom,” he says,  “and you really roll

Andrew Cohen Joins APPE Executive Board

On July 1, APPE welcomed Andrew I. Cohen as the newest member of the Executive Board. Dr. Cohen is an Associate Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Jean Beer Blumenfeld Center for Ethics at Georgia State University, where he has worked since 2003. He is author of Philosophy, Ethics, and Public Policy (Routledge, 2015). He is also editor (with Christopher Heath Wellman) of Contemporary Debates in Applied Ethics (Wiley-Blackwell, 2005; 2nd revised edition 2014). His current research interests include themes in moral repair for historic injustice as well as issues in applied ethics. He is PI on a recent NEH collaborative research grant to study moral injury among post-deployment members of the US armed forces. Dr. Cohen joined APPE over 12 years ago, and has been an active member of the association; he has presented papers or served on panels at several APPE conferences, and has coached the GSU Ethics Bowl team since 2010. As an APPE member, Dr. Cohen became particularly impressed with the inviting atmosphere at these annual conferences. He comments, “it’s one of the things that I talk about with my friends—that when we go to these conferences we look forward to it not only because we get to spend time with our friends, but because it’s a nice place to go to do work as a scholar and to talk with other people about the work that they’re doing. Ethics Bowl Summer Workshop Meets At San Jose State University

From Friday June 30 to Sunday July 2, returning and prospective Ethics Bowl participants met at APPE’s 4th annual Ethics Bowl Summer Workshop. The event was hosted by San Jose State University and was attended by about 40 individuals, which included representatives from both the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl and the National High School Ethics Bowl. The Ethics Bowl Summer Workshop was created with the goal of giving new participants an opportunity to train for Ethics Bowl, and to give returning participants the chance to hone their skills and collaborate on new ideas.  Although workshop leaders develop a preliminary agenda, the topics for workshop sessions are decided on by the participants on the first morning of the workshop. This ensures that participants get the information they are most in need of coming in to the event. This year, the workshop ran participant breakout sessions on the following eight topics:
  1. Research and Moral Frameworks
  2. Starting a High School Ethics Bowl Team
  3. Big Picture (organizing a large bowl and looking forward to future bowls)
  4. Recruitment of Team Members
  5. Collaboration/Coordination between the High School and College Bowls
  6. Judging
  7. Managing Time
  8. Diversity and Community Outreach
In addition, more than half of the workshop participants attended our Friday afternoon special session for newcomers—the ABC's of Ethics Bowl—which is an increase over previous years. APPE to Introduce Thesis Competitions at Annual Conference

APPE is excited to announce that we will be adding a 3 Minute Thesis (3MT®) competition and a PechaKucha session to the 2018 conference program. The 3MT® competition will give students a dynamic new forum in which to share their work. The concept of a 3MT originated at University of Queensland, Australia as a way for graduate students to develop their communication and presentation skills by presenting their research project in 3 minutes, using only 1 PowerPoint slide. APPE is launching this new event at the 2018 Annual Conference to provide a valuable opportunity for students who wish to practice sharing their work succinctly in non-specialist language--a skill that can prove critical in preparing for job interviews, formulating grant proposals, etc. Additionally, the event will offer an excellent opportunity for graduate students in all areas of applied ethics to network, learn from others in different subject areas, and enhance their professional credentials.  The competition will offer a cash prize and more details will be forthcoming. The 2018 Annual Conference will also introduce a new PechaKucha session. The PechaKucha session originated in Tokyo in 2003, and offers a fast-paced format where presenters structure their talk around 20 slides, each with only 1 image, and discuss each slide for 20 seconds. The APPE PechaKucha session will offer another lively presentation forum where individuals will be able to share their research and discover opportunities for professional collaboration. APPE Welcomes New Chair of the Executive Board

On July 1, APPE welcomed Gretchen Winter as our new Chair of the Executive Board. For the past 10 years, Ms. Winter has served as the Executive Director of the Center for Professional Responsibility in Business and Society at the College of Business at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before that, she worked at Baxter International Inc. as Vice President and Counsel, Business Practices, where she developed the company's global ethics program. She holds a J.D. from the University of Chicago and received her bachelor's degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Ms. Winter joined APPE in 2008 and has served as a member of the board since July, 2014. As chair, Ms. Winter is looking forward to working closely with APPE’s Executive Board and to identifying and responding to the needs and interests of APPE members. Over the next two years, Ms. Winter says she is eager participate in the effort to “structure the organization in a way that will enable APPE to thrive for the foreseeable future.” Although Ms. Winter has served as Chair of the Ethics and Compliance Officer Association Board of Directors, and is currently President of the Board of the Leadership Fellows Association of Leadership Greater Chicago, she is looking forward to the unique opportunity to serve on a board primarily comprised of academics. APPE moves to Prindle Institute at DePauw University

APPE has completed the transition of its headquarters to the Janet Prindle Institute at DePauw University. The selection of Prindle was announced in February of this year, following a nationwide search for a new host institution, and the move was completed this week. In addition to a historic, park-like campus and a serene facility, as a host institution, Prindle offers "a strong financial partnership, [...] close alignment of mission, a record of engagement with APPE, evidence of ongoing commitment by campus leaders, and an energetic and visionary director with whom to partner," says APPE's chair of the Executive Board, Sarah Pfatteicher. The transition to the new office space has gone smoothly and the Association is adjusting quickly to its new home. We are now looking forward to serving our members and the field of applied ethics from this beautiful location. Message from interim Executive Director designate

Welcome to the new APPE website! I want to extend a warm greeting to all of my APPE colleagues, and to our community of scholars, educators, and professionals. You are the people who are advancing knowledge and practice in applied ethics, and you are the people who are forwarding our work into the 21st century. So I want to start by thanking you for your contributions to the future of our field, and for your continued support of the Association for Practical and Professional Ethics. As we enter a new season at our organization, it is my hope that APPE will continue to serve as a source of support, encouragement, and inspiration for your work. The APPE staff, board, and current and future leadership have been working hard to move our association’s headquarters to its new home at the Janet Prindle Institute for Ethics at DePauw University. This move to Prindle marks the beginning of an exciting partnership that promises to enrich our activities and programs through collaboration with an Institute that shares our organizational mission. We anticipate that APPE will thrive at its new host institution. On June 30, Stuart Yoak will be retiring as Executive Director, and on July 1, I will take office as the part-time interim Executive Director of APPE. Ethics Bowl Workshop June 30-July 2

APPE's 4th annual Ethics Bowl Summer Workshop will be held from Friday June 30 to Sunday July 2 at San Jose State University. The Ethics Bowl summer workshops were initiated in 2014 in order to give prospective new Ethics Bowl participants the opportunity to train for the event, and to give returning participants the chance to hone their skills and collaborate on new ideas.  Since then, the workshop has been held every summer at rotating university venues around the US, and has instructed scores of participants on Ethics Bowl topics, such as coaching, judging, student voices, the future of the bowl, and organizing regional competitions. This summer's workshop will cover many of these and other similar topics that will help to prepare individuals for the next Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl in Chicago in March 2018.
